One of the remarkable sites in the outskirts of Imbabura is the Corazón del Imbabura, that is a natural formation produced by the slipping of one of its flanks and curiously formed into the shape of a heart.  In its interior there are micro climates that have permitted vegetation to grow creating its own ecosystem on the mountain.  It predominately consists of pumamaki trees(oreopanax ecuadorensis). Also on the mountain are interesting varieties of mountain birds, small mammals, insects and reptiles.

El Corazón del Imbabura is a unique place because of its shape, where myths are created, a biodiversity and over all an impressive view of the San Pablo lake (Imbakucha). Nearby are other sites of interest like the trees of  Lechero Tupatán and Kingu Cruz, trees that are considered sacred in the Andean worldview.
